Extra-Curricular Activities

Student Council

At NYA, we believe that students thrive when they are entrusted with real responsibilities. Through the Student Council, our students will have the opportunity to:

  • Build confidence and communication skills
  • Engage in democratic decision-making
  • Work collaboratively with peers and teachers
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community
  • Develop school pride and ownership

We have various leadership roles in the Student Council. They are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Sports Captain. Additional support roles for Associate Executive Members are included when required.

The Student Council is elected by their peers to address issues of concern and organize student events and activities. The council members help share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school administration.

The students at our school elect council members from Grade 5 who they think will represent them best. Each member of the Student Council gets the opportunity to actively participate in school-wide activities, make decisions, and see democracy in action.

Why is this beneficial for students?

Elected student leaders gain responsibility, experience working on a team, increased pride in their school, and a chance to interact with their fellow students in making decisions and debating issues. This is the ultimate chance to become an excellent citizen.

What does the Student Council do?

The Student Council chooses its own goals after discussing ideas with others. The Council might create publicity about school events; promote school pride, possibly start fundraising programs as well as sponsoring other school events and activities.

Sports

At NYA, we facilitate Physical & Health Education (PHE) and movement activities as an essential part of preschool, supporting children’s holistic development. Through active play and structured movement, children develop gross and fine motor skills, balance, coordination, and overall physical strength. Movement plays a key role in brain development by strengthening neural connections and enhancing focus, memory, language development, and problem-solving skills. PHE also promotes social interaction, cooperation, and turn-taking, while helping children build self-regulation, confidence, and emotional well-being. By encouraging active and healthy habits early on, movement-based learning lays a strong foundation for lifelong health, learning, and overall development.

As our students grow we provide a wide range of team and individual sports as part of a structured Physical Education program. Our staff create opportunities for small and large motor skill development and leadership training for captaincy. Students will gain a general working knowledge of games & sports, and learn about their nutritional and personal physical health.

Our students will get to experience traditional school games such as cricket, basketball, tennis, table tennis and athletics. Alternative sports such as frisbee, softball, archery, volley ball and a golf range will find time in a busy curriculum.

After School Activities

The students are given a chance to explore a variety of activities, hone their skills and be creative through After School Clubs. These include a selection of activities such as: music, martial arts, dance, baking, painting, basketball and Zumba. Under certain safety and seasonal conditions we have a buffet of alternative activities: These may involve ‘wheels in motion’, bike riding, scootering, skateboarding and roller skating. Connected to maker-space and robotics, we would hope to offer a drone flying space.

Field Trips and Camps

Field trips are offered during the Semester 1 and 2. Camps run during Winter and Summer breaks. Details and program are specific to each and will be posted in advance of each event.

Camps and events help our students in their holistic development. Not only do they help them feel more connected to their school community, but they also boost their confidence and self-esteem. Students get an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and make new friends. Students learn about different cultures and traditions and develop new interests and a sense of responsibility.

At NYA, we organize Summer and Winter camps for 4 weeks each. These activities are a great initiative taken up by our school to help students make optimum use of their holidays by learning and mastering new skills. Other students outside NYA are also welcome for these camps.

Through these programs, we provide a fun and educational learning experience. Each camp is designed carefully keeping in mind the age of the students, their interests and needs. These camps are closely supervised and aim at improving the engagement in extracurricular activities. We include a wide range of activities such as music, art, language learning, sports, design thinking, PHE, group activities and outdoor play experiences. The themes are usually connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the students share about the action they can take to help solve the problems identified.
