Grade 3 & 4

During their elementary school years, students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 accomplish increasingly complex tasks and deepen their conceptual understanding in all subject areas. Our comprehensive curriculum includes English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Technology (including a Maker Space and the Design Thinking Process), Visual and Performing Arts, Music, Modern Languages, and Physical and Health Education. Equally important is the social and emotional development of our students, which is an integral part of teaching and learning at NYA.

The way in which we engage students in learning is as important as what we teach. Our pedagogy emphasizes inquiry- and project-based instruction and learning. We organize our curriculum into interdisciplinary units of study that integrate multiple subject areas, thereby enriching the learning experience for our students. Through project-based learning, children actively investigate their interests, discover new ideas and develop their own theories. In keeping with our mission and values, teachers encourage and support each child’s unique style of learning, interests and talents.

New York Academy employs a Balanced Literacy Approach, including the Word Study and the Words Their Way approach, Reader’s Workshop with guided leveled reading and classroom leveled libraries, Writers’ Workshop, the Eight Traits of Conversation and the Four Traits of Presentation.

PreK students learn to establish and sustain positive relations with peers and adults. They learn to engage in increasingly complex social interaction, read and interpret emotional cues and respond appropriately. Students also learn to participate cooperatively and constructively in group situations.
