    MOTHER/TODDLER

    Our Approach

At New York Academy we know that learning begins from day one. In our Toddler programs, children learn through play and a wide variety of child-centered activities. They learn fine and gross motor skills and achieve developmental milestones. Helping children develop language skills and use words to express their feelings and thoughts are significant parts of the program. We give children plenty of hands-on opportunities to explore art materials in a safe environment. The focus is on learning through fun play and activity, including music, movement and a variety of sensory learning experiences. The program offers children a well-rounded and rich learning experience.

    Mother/Toddler Program

When our youngest students join our school, they are welcomed to the Mother/Toddler Program in order to ease into a new environment and experiences. Here mothers and toddlers participate together in art, music, gym and other activities for one hour a day. Children in this program are typically between twelve and eighteen months of age. The student teacher ratio is currently 6:1. Toddler Program

When students from our Mother/Toddler Program are ready to advance and attend school alone, we offer the Toddler Program for 1.5 hours a day. In this program, children participate without their mothers. Typically, children are between eighteen and twenty-four months. This program prepares children for Nursery and Pre-School in a fun environment that focuses on learning through play and sets children up to love their educational experience The student teacher ratio is currently 5:1.

    NURSERY

    Our Approach

The New York Academy Nursery and Preschool programs offer our young learners a rich and comprehensive curriculum and engaging learning experience. The curriculum focuses on preparing students for elementary school as well as their social and emotional growth. The current student teacher ratio is 8:1.

Focusing on the social and emotional and well as academic needs of our young learners, our pedagogy emphasizes inquiry- and project-based instruction and learning. Through project-based learning, children actively investigate their interests, discover new ideas and develop their own understanding. In keeping with our mission and values, teachers encourage and support each child’s unique style of learning, interests and talents.

    ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

    Kindergarten 9:1

    1 and 2: 13:1

    3 and 4: 10:1

During their elementary school years, students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 accomplish increasingly complex tasks and deepen their conceptual understanding in all subject areas. Our comprehensive curriculum includes English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Technology (including a Maker Space and the Design Thinking Process), Visual and Performing Arts, Music, Modern Languages, and Physical and Health Education. Equally important is the social and emotional development of our students, which is an integral part of teaching and learning at NYA.

The way in which we engage students in learning is as important as what we teach. Our pedagogy emphasizes inquiry- and project-based instruction and learning. We organize our curriculum into interdisciplinary units of study that integrate multiple subject areas, thereby enriching the learning experience for our students. Through project-based learning, children actively investigate their interests, discover new ideas and develop their own theories. In keeping with our mission and values, teachers encourage and support each child’s unique style of learning, interests and talents.
